“GLOB~S really enables students to understand the “why” behind just about anything they are interested in. There are not only opportunities to learn from the most impressive leaders in their fields, but there is room for individual innovation and driving your own discoveries.”
Practical Business Applications
I’m extremely grateful for the experience GLOB~S gave me. Confronting shocks, challenges, and disruptions as a corporate decision-maker is more relevant today than ever before. GLOB~S introduced me to the practical business applications of much of what I studied as an international relations student and had a profound influence on my current career path.
What did you take away from your experience at GLOB~S?
Kate Dobbins
GLOB-S was an incredible opportunity for me to look at the business world from a quantitative perspective. It’s easy to think about Fortune 500 companies and the economy as a whole from a distance, but analyzing the underlying data that drives trends and decision making provided a much deeper understanding of how the “business” actually operates.
Ryan McMullin
My main takeaway from my GLOB~S experience is that many of the observations and conclusions from the lab are highly actionable! There is a clearly defined link between much of the work we conducted and corporate decision-making, and GLOB~S presents the opportunity to tackle these elements with an informed perspective backed by research and data analytics.
What projects did you work on in the lab?
How did it align with your academic interests?
One project I remember distinctly was working with GDELT – the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone. Publicly available through Google BigQuery, one of the features of GDELT is the integration of the Goldstein conflict-cooperation scale based on lexical analysis to news articles and other media. We aggregated these resources and tracked Goldstein scores for bilateral country relationships, matched with global events or shocks that may have contributed to any positive or negative changes in the conflict-cooperation scores, and used this context to look at the impact on corporate decision-making, investment, innovation etc.
As an international relations student with a focus in economics, I thought the work with GLOB~S was the perfect intersection between the social, cultural, and political factors IR often examines with the empiricism of economics. I really enjoyed seeing what I always thought were soft, intangible factors presented in a tangible, quantifiable way.
